Peninsula Harbour

Project Sheet

Location: Lake Superior, Marathon, Ontario, Canada

Year: 2012 (ongoing)

Project Type(s): Sediment remediation

Project Description: Peninsula Harbour is a 3,000 acre embayment located in Lake Superior, which was designated as an Area of Concern due to PCB and Hg contaminated sediments distributed throughout the site. The application of a thin layer cap (TLC) was selected as the primary active remedy for this site. The final TLC area covered 252,000 m2 (62 acres) with approximately 15 cm of clean sand on top of the contaminated sediments. Various cap thicknesses and capping materials were applied depending on the energy of the area and vessel transport. The TLC was placed using a barge-mounted long-arm excavator and clamshell bucket and large deck barge with support vessels for material delivery and vessel positioning.
