Project Description: This project addresses marsh degradation along Jekyll Creek, Georgia, caused by sea-level rise, erosion, and reduced sediment supply. To restore the area, a thin-layer placement (TLP) project was implemented between 2020 and 2022, utilizing dredged material from the Intracoastal Waterway. Approximately 5,000 cubic yards of sediment were placed over 5 acres of low-elevation marsh to an average thickness of 10 to 15 cm. The primary goals were to increase the marsh’s surface elevation and enhance its resilience to further environmental stressors. This initiative is a significant pilot project for the southeastern U.S., featuring comprehensive monitoring to assess vegetation recovery, habitat function, and the overall effectiveness of the technique.
