Project Description: This project addresses severe erosion and marsh degradation at Deer Island, Mississippi, caused by major hurricanes and sea-level rise. A restoration effort used 170,000 cubic yards of dredged material to rebuild 100 acres of marsh habitat in the Deer Island Lagoon. The main goal was to raise the land’s elevation to create a more resilient shoreline capable of protecting the island from future storms. As of 2024, there is a proposal to expand this restoration to an additional 400 acres. However, long-term monitoring efforts to evaluate the project’s success are still pending funding.
