Project Description: This project focuses on the restoration of 52 acres of degraded salt marsh at Avalon Marsh, New Jersey, which had suffered from elevation loss and vegetation dieback. To counteract this, a thin-layer placement (TLP) project was implemented to raise the marsh platform by applying dredged sediment. Conducted in two phases from 2014 to 2016, the project added a 3 to 6-inch layer of sediment sourced from nearby dredging operations. While the sediment initially buried existing plants, post-project monitoring showed it successfully increased the marsh’s elevation. Over time, this led to the substantial recovery and healthy recolonization of native salt marsh vegetation, enhancing the area’s resilience.
