Project Description: This project addresses the widespread degradation of Pierce Marsh in Galveston Bay, Texas, where rising sea levels and regional subsidence have caused the marsh to lose elevation and convert to open water. To counteract this, a thin-layer placement (TLP) project was executed to restore the area by raising the marsh platform. Between 2022 and 2024, approximately 280,000 cubic yards of dredged sediment were placed over 115 acres of the degraded marsh. The main goal of this multi-decade effort is to elevate the marsh by one meter and reestablish native vegetation. A comprehensive monitoring program is in place to track sediment settlement and manage vegetation planting, ensuring the long-term success of the restoration.
