Project Description: This project addresses the significant loss of tidal marshes in California’s Elkhorn Slough, an issue driven by historical harbor construction and increased tidal erosion. To counteract this degradation, a multi-phase restoration effort was implemented using thin-layer placement (TLP) to raise the marsh elevation. The project spanned from 2015 to 2021, restoring a total of 119 acres across several areas, including Hester, Minhoto, and Seal Bend marshes. During the restoration, hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of sediment were strategically placed to build up the subsided land. Due to the ecological sensitivity of the estuary, the project included extensive, ongoing monitoring to track vegetation recovery and ensure the long-term success of the restoration.
